“DISTANCE”, written by WEST and produced by acclaimed sound producer Young OG Beats, introduces listeners to a refreshing blend of Afrobeat infused with rich R&B emotion—an artistic evolution shaped by WEST’s musical roots.

Born into a music-loving family, WEST credits his mother as the foundation of his talent and growth.

According to him:

> “My mum inspired me and also helped me discover my musical gift. She had been in the music world before, so when she noticed my potential, she guided me through rehearsals, techniques, and everything I needed to find my voice.”

Growing up, WEST immersed himself in classic R&B. His biggest musical mentor was R. Kelly, while he also drew inspiration from greats like Joe, Avant, and Usher. These influences shaped his early sound, but over the years, WEST refined his craft—creating a unique Afrobeat style rooted in deep emotion and soulful storytelling.

The single “DISTANCE” was born out of a deeply personal experience. At the time of writing, WEST’s wife had traveled out of the country, leaving a void that weighed heavily on him. The separation, the longing, and the memories of their shared moments inspired him to express his emotions through music.
